Risk and Complications

As with any surgery, there are operative and long-term risks associated with weight-loss surgical procedures that should be discussed with your doctor.  In addition, each type of bariatric surgery has its own special considerations you should consider. It is important to remember that there are no guarantees in any kind of medicine or surgery. There can be unexpected outcomes in even the simplest procedures. Possible risks associated with weight-loss surgery include, but are not limited to the following:

  • There is a risk of vitamin deficiency if the patient is not compliant with the required vitamin therapy
  • Bleeding
  • Pain
  • Pneumonia
  • Complications due to anesthesia and medications
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Injury to stomach, esophagus or surrounding organs
  • Infection
  • Stroke or heart attack

More details will be discussed at the information session and at personal consult with surgeon.
