Going Home

Most weight-loss surgery patients are discharged from the hospital within two days after surgery. The amount of time you spend in the hospital is determined by your unique medical considerations and by your compliance with your physician’s post-surgery orders. When you are discharged, you will receive instructions to follow at home including diet and nutrition guidelines, surgical-site care and the date of your first follow-up appointment with Dr. Scott or Dr. Adams, our bariatric surgeons. Your follow-up schedule will depend on the type of surgery you choose.

Gastric Bypass & Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • Two weeks after surgery
  • Four weeks after surgery
  • Three months after surgery
  • Six months after surgery
  • Annually for life

Adjustable Gastric Banding

  • Four weeks after surgery
  • Every two months for the first year
  • Every three months for the second year
  • Annually for life

A bariatric dietitian will be available at every follow-up appointment to answer any questions and to encourage and ensure  your ongoing success.

Gastric band patients who attend all follow-up appointments can call Dr. Scott or Dr. Adams to schedule band adjustments between appointments. Patients who miss an appointment must schedule a follow-up appointment with a surgeon before scheduling an adjustment visit.
